LearnNordic is a platform under development. Thus, the files you can download now is the preliminary version of the course. We are updating the platform and course continously in order to improve the content and technical features.
As of now, the audiofiles are available as a .zip-file. To get the best listening-experience, we recommend you to play the files through a fitting program (VLC, DDMusic MP3 player or similar), where you can pause, or go back 10 seconds if needed, and turn the volume up and down as you like.

About the audio-course

The method behind the course is based on a style called The Thinking Method - a way of learning where the emphasis is on ensuring your understanding and engagement through a carefully thought-through course. All you need to do to get started, is to listen to the introduction given in the first audiofile, and go from there. It starts comletely from scratch and proceeds until you have been enmeshed in the knowledge and way of thinking needed for you to continue improving Danish on your own. If you fully concentrate as you go through the course, progress at all levels is guaranteed.

LearnNordic is not about making you pass exams, it is not about making a game out of learning. Nor is about endless repetition, memorization tricks or about obscure grammatical concepts. Rather, we want to pass on the core knowledge of what is needed to be thought through while learning a new language. In the course, we have integrated key elements essential for grasping and mastering the structure of Danish effeciently, bringing in elements of history, etymology, linguistics, philosophy, and culture, while at the same time focusing on providing you with the useful vocabulary, methods of constructing more complex sentences, and sufficient occasions for practising. This method is useful for everyone ready to try something different - you will most likely experience that it ends up working far better than what the school-systems provide!

There are four simple steps when going through the audio-course:

Play/pause

Start listening! Whenever there is a question asked, or whenever you feel like taking brake, pause until you are ready to continue.

Listen

Listen carefully to the teacher and the student's answers in the course. Think of it like conversing with a friend - you would want to pay attention!

Think

The core feature of your course is not about what the teacher thinks - it is about what you realize through thinking. So take your time to ponder!

Formulate

Formulating in your mind and in your mouth is essential - don't allow yourself to skip this part. After all, language is for communication, right?

Private Lessons

Making a free online course available to as many people as possible is the main project of LearnNordic. However, having a personal teacher, who can add and adjust the information of the course to fit your needs, is unbeatable and is a chance of efficient learning we want to provide for you.

Therefore, if you want the last 10% efficiency in learning from getting personalized feedback from an attentive teacher, LearnNordic offers private classes for a very fair price. Get in touch if you are interested.

There are two options:

Online sessions (requires good internet-connection for optimal learning!)
Sessions at Dokk1 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Price: 300dkk per session-hour (200dkk for students). A session hour is 60 effective minutes of in-person language learning.

In either case, we can go through the course - or, if you feel ready for it: converse in Danish!
We will practice at a pace fitting to you. Whenever there is something you seem to be consistently struggling with, thought-through, precise explanations will be given in a manner fitting your language-backgound.

About LearnNordic

LearnNordic is currently run by one person, the owner Jakob Hørgreen:

As a part of my studies in Transnational History, I was doing a project on Cyprus researching grass-root ways to peace on the Island, when I crossed ways with Mihalis Eleftheriou, a creative cosmopolitan linguist. By teaching languages through thinking holistically and by paying close attention to detail, he had developed "The Thinking Method". After testing it out myself, learning Spanish and French on Language Transfer, I knew the potential was outstanding.

Since I returned to Denmark, I have heard countless stories of internationals unable to learn Danish from the school-system and from the commercial apps. Even after years of trying they can't speak i Danish, they say. So when I saw Mihalis had written a guide-book, and invited everyone interested to help spread the Thinking Method style, I saw it as an opportunity to do my part.

This personal prelude has turned into a Danish Course on LearnNordic, having taken the skeleton of The Thinking Method style and transforming it into its own thing - a unique course in Danish. I want to make the listeners/students feel like they are properly guided to discover and comprehend what otherwised seemed covered or hard to grasp. And so far, it has succeeded, even while the course is still improving. I see it, the students feel it is working.

The main purpose of the project is to make learning the nordic tongues free of charge, liberated from exams and superficial standards, and most importantly; a way of learning fitted to how we actually think as humans. Understanding ourselves is also to understand language.

For me, learning a language is like rediscovering how we as humans think and feel; Language, as you will know, is metaphors that we agree on symbolize certain things, ideas, relations and thoughts. Comprehending this while learning the language, will not only help you grasp how to approach language-learning more quickly, it will also make you reflect on why we say the things, we do - it will be transformative on a personal level.
So, jump onboard and share the journey of (re)discovering how we formulate ourselves in English and Nordic tongue!

LearnNordic is not a project made to generate money. Instead, it is a way of learning Nordic Languages made accessible for everyone, rich and poor, young and old.
Learning languages should be accessible for everyone, not only the few select who are lucky to find the key to learning languages themselves. Of course, as this project is betting on the succes through good-will and karma, donations are greatly appreciated.
